I love the Emmys. Daytime, Nighttime, whatever. All TV, all the time, that’s what I love. So in case you were wondering, here is what I think about this years Emmy nominations.
I should probably note that I’m not going through ALL of the nominations, just drama, comedy, writing, and variety. I would’ve included Limited Series but I am woefully behind on those. I also have LOTS of opinions on the acting categories (naturally), but that is not what this blog is for.
BEST COMEDY
- Louie
- Modern Family
- Parks and Recreation
- Silicon Valley
- Transparent
- Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
- Veep
I have a feeling that this is going to be between TRANSPARENT and KIMMY SCHMIDT but my goodness there are some amazing options! Love LOUIE, so hard. PARKS AND RECREATION deserves a win, having been one of the most awards-under-appreciated-shows in the last ten years. However, I believe you should win an award based on what you put out THAT YEAR, not longevity, and this year the best show was by far SILICON VALLEY. That show is insanely good, and just when people were getting fed up with the lack of female presence on the show, they introduced a recurring female character that absolutely blew it out of the water. It is time that show started getting some credit for what it’s putting out there.
SIDE NOTE: NO BROOKLYN 9-9? I’m also upset about the lack of COMMUNITY, but it seems ridiculous that B99 is absent after getting so much award attention last year.
BEST DRAMA
- Better Call Saul
- Downtown Abbey
- Game of Thrones
- Homeland
- House of Cards
- Mad Men
- Orange is the New Black
ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK, ‘nough said. You all know (if you’ve read this article) how I feel about many of these shows. BCS and HOMELAND were strong this year, as was DOWNTON ABBEY, but does anyone know why DOWNTON is still getting nominated? There are plenty of options for this character, it seems odd that this show remains on the list when it’s not nearly the water cooler buzz it was the first two seasons.
COMEDY WRITING
- Episodes
- Louie
- Silicon Valley
- Last Man on Earth
- Transparent
- Veep
Hopefully LAST MAN ON EARTH. Most of these writers have gone through the ranks at COMMUNITY and SNL, and it is incredibly apparent in the writing. I could not love this show more if I tried, and I am so excited to see where it goes next season considering how this season ended.
SIDE NOTE: Stop being pretentious Emmy Voters and give COMMUNITY some freaking credit already! Sheesh.
DRAMA WRITING
- Better Call Saul
- Game of Thrones
- Mad Men “Lost Horizon”
- Mad Men “Person to Person”
- The Americans
If you’ve read this article, then you can imagine my annoyance at GOT’s presence here. The award will probably go to the MAD MEN finale, which I found completely unsurprising (though well written) and definitely not worth the hype in my mind. I would rather this go to THE AMERICANS. This is another phenomenal show that does not get enough awards credit, which is a real shame.
VARIETY SERIES
- Inside Amy Schumer
- Key and Peele
- Last Week Tonight
- The Colbert Report
- The Daily Show
It’s probably safe to say that AMY SCHUMER has this locked in, but LWT could come in with an upset, and with Jon Stewart leaving TDS and Colbert’s show already ending, this may be a toss up. I would give it to John Oliver’s LAST WEEK TONIGHT. While Amy Schumer and KEY & PEELE have been incredibly impressive and dialogue-opening, Oliver’s ability to bring attention to the mundane and make it viral every week is amazing, and deserves some critical recognition.
VARIETY SPECIAL
- Key and Peele Super Bowl Special
- Louis C.K.: Live at the Comedy Store
- Mel Brooks Live at the Geffen
- 72nd Golden Globes
- SNL 40th Special
Awards shows like to award other awards shows, so this is likely to go to the 72nd GG’s, but Hollywood likes to also pat itself on the back and SNL definitely gives them an opportunity with its anniversary special. Then there’s Mel Brooks. Most people probably didn’t actually watch this, but it’s Mel Brooks, so he has a shot. I would personally give this to Key & Peele, though I do love me some Mel too.
Alright, that’s enough opinions for today. Can’t wait for the Emmy’s to see where this all ends up! Let me know your picks for the Emmy’s too!
